Review: Prince of Persia
new and improved
By: mystragis - Posted On: 1/5/2009 9:36:52 AM

A few days ago I sat down with the new Prince of Persia (PoP) game, not really sure what to expect. I saw the early clip of PoP at E3 last year and it looked amazing, but so many times this can be misleading. Not so this time. Of course, there are a few minuscule points that were a bit frustrating, but they never took away from the awesome-ness I felt while playing PoP.

Characters-
The Prince - The game itself doesn't really provide much information on this guy: Where did he come from? Is he really a Prince? How is he related to the other Prince of Persia? He looks similar to the other Prince with the same scarf and build, but this new Prince's character is completely different. First thing I noticed is that this guy has a sense of humor while the other Prince had the dark and silent thing going on. And the other most noticeable thing is that he has a partner throughout that helps with some awesome new moves.

Elika - This princess has a tough job - protecting the lands from the Dark Lord who's trying to escape. She's agile, tough, and has some magic that kicks ass. Why does she need the Prince to help her out? Half the time she's saving his butt (which she totally checks out later). But the banter and the back and forth between these two is priceless. It definitely adds to the gameplay.

Gameplay-

Playing this game was a treat. There's nothing like running along walls and leaping from wall to platform to wall. This time around, the developers upped the Prince's moves a bit. The Prince helps Elika restore the fertile grounds which in turn unlock different energy plates. With these plates, the Prince isn't just jumping from one measly wall to the next; he's soaring through the air or running along the walls that seriously defy gravity. It is during these sequences you see how much fun the developers had creating these different areas.

There is a small learning curve, because you have to time most everything just right. This includes the boss fights. There several different fighting sequences that occur and if you don't hit the right button at exactly the right moment, the boss will throw the Prince around like a rag doll. When you do get it right, it’s always a good feeling.

Graphics-
Incredible. The cell shading, the look, the way everything moves, it’s hard to describe how great PoP looks. The design is so different than anything out right now, it is very refreshing. It reminds me of the old Don Bluth cartoons (which I think are still some of the best). If you're not a big PoP fan, at least check it out for the graphics.

Now I've heard from some people that they didn't care for the game because you couldn't die. I say get over it. How many games like this keep track of lives anymore? Just think of Elika as the middle person who eliminates the whole dying sequence and restarting menu. She takes you straight away to the last platform you were at. It actually makes sense and things flow a bit faster this way. (Although watching the Prince die might be entertaining).

Overall, this is a great game that everyone should try. If you're not sure, rent it. It doesn't take very long to play through, just a weekend devoted to the Prince of Persia.

PS3 LBP and 360 007
By: Infinity - Posted On: 1/2/2009 3:49:03 PM
007 LBPI've been remiss mentioning a contest going on over at Aeropause to give away one LittleBigPlanet God of War costume pack code and one 007: Quantum of Solace (Xbox 360) map pack code.  I've been horribly busy lately, what with another child about to enter my home and let slip the dogs of... tiny baby... stuff... everywhere.  Hey I told you I'm busy.  This stuff doesn't write itself, m'kay?

Anyway run on over there and find out whatcha gotta do to get that Kratos code for LittleBigPlanet, the one GameStop dished out as a preorder bonus.  I got mine when I ordered it and got a great laugh when the costume randomizer made my Sackboy have the sack-eating-plant body and minotaur head complete with waggling ring through its nose.  Oh and if you want some map pack for Quantum of Solace for Xbox 360 -- the PC review ...

new year, new games
By: mystragis - Posted On: 12/30/2008 10:49:51 AM
There are a ton of games coming out this year that I think has a bunch people really excited.  But for now, lets just focus on January's releases.  Time to make use of those leftover giftcards from Christmas. (fyi: I starred some I'm keeping an eye out for).

1.6.09 -
Fishing Master World Tour (Wii)
Retro Game Challenge (DS)

1.13.09 -
Deal or No Deal (Wii)
The Lord of the Rings: Conquest (PS3)
Moon (DS)

1.20.09 -
*Star Ocean: Second Evolution (PSP)
*Dead Rising: Chop Til You Drop (Wii)

1.21.09 -
*Skate 2 (PS3)

1.27.09 -
Afro Samurai (PS3)

Not a whole bunch, but definitely enough to keep you occupied until February and March roll around.

There Are Better Choices
By: Infinity - Posted On: 12/29/2008 10:00:00 AM
dark pspTouring a variety of speciality gaming retailers this holiday weekend drove home two big realities of the gaming marketplace.  First, the Wii and Xbox 360 hold front and center in nearly every store.  Second, the PlayStation Portable has been relegated to maybe one to one-and-a-half standing racks.  The very slow release schedule for the handheld in recent months has done the inevitable by relegating it to sixth-class status behind the Nintendo DS, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation 2 games.

As someone who is always on the lookout for choice PSP games this is a reminder of an unhappy situation.  A review of PSPWorld's Top 10 Games for 2008 doesn't really make me feel much better.  When a few of them aren't really top-rated games of much staying power -- Harvey Birdman and Secret Agent Clank come to mind -- it makes me think they could have dug a bit deeper to show the system's ...

Child's Play Needs Your Help
By: Infinity - Posted On: 12/25/2008 8:50:19 AM
cagOn behalf of everyone here at TripleTags I'd like to wish you and yours a very happy holiday season.  As you sit down to enjoy time with your family and friends, even if you can only reach out to each other by telephone this year, it's always important to take a moment and realize just how lucky we all are.

Of course we're extremely lucky to be so well off that we can not just dream about video games but play them, and perhaps even create them for others to enjoy.  But there are others that love to play but have special challenges that keep them from enjoying this great hobby, challenges that are nobody's fault at all.

That's why I'd like everyone to run on over to CheapAssGamer and donate $5 using their super-easy ChipIn widget.  It all goes to the fantastic Penny-Arcade Child's Play record-breaking charity which benefits sick kids at hospitals all over the world.  Plus as a CAG member, which you should be already if you know what's good for you, every $5 gets you in a ...
more gameplay action

Here's a newer clip of some actual gameplay. I just can't get enough of it. Just going off of looks, it appears that the controls are going to be fluid and responsive. And I think the graphics speak for themselves. Maybe I'm stepping out on a limb here and I know some great stuff is coming out next year, but I'd say this is a top contender for Game of the Year 2009.

Looks like Nintendo is a bit more normal; not to worry though, they are still one of the biggest sellers out there, but one of their games is not. According to the Wall Street Journal, the much hyped-gonna-be-huge music game from Shigeru Miyamoto, Wii Music, is not so huge. Rock Band and Guitar Hero are huge while Wii Music is just so-so.

Maybe because the track list isn't quite there (ie. not very rock worthy) and maybe because there is no DLC and maybe because Miyamoto himself said that he didn't expect the game to be an instant hit. Whatever the case, it doesn't look like Wii Music will ever be big contender against Rock Band and Guitar Hero.

This is too bad, I thought it would've been fun to use the Wii remote as a conductor. Oh well, maybe the holiday will help it pick up a bit.

the list of what not to play
By: mystragis - Posted On: 12/16/2008 10:31:59 AM
I like lists, they help keep things organized and neat.  Plus, everyone's doing it - kids at Christmas and prosecutors in Michigan.  Yep, Kym Worthy, Wayne County Prosecutor came up with a list that she "borrowed" from the National Institute on Media and the Family (NIMF).

Worthy uses her list to categorize most of the violence happening in her neighborhood, claiming that these games are responsible for a couple of deaths:

-Blitz: The League II
-Gears of War 2
-Saints Row 2
-Dead Space
-Fallout 3
-Far Cry 2
-Legendary
-Left 4 Dead
-Resistance 2
-Silent Hill: Homecoming (really?!)

Its a good list, full of blazing guns and gore and violence, no doubt.  But where's Call of Duty 4?  Last night in the grocery store I heard a mom telling her son he was grounded from CoD.  This game should've definitely been on the list.  But its not, so that means its open season and everyone should play CoD!

aahhh--mazing

Just came across the new video for Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. I think I let out an audible gasp I was so excited to see more from Naughty Dog and the adventures of Nathan Drake. The video is short and sweet and if you've played the game, you're gonna be just as excited as I was. And if you haven't, you still have plenty of time to pick it up and enjoy it for yourself.
